Riga The insurgent mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin probably had the plan to capture the Russian military leadership. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing Western officials. The Russian secret service FSB found out about the plans before the revolt, and Prigozhin then carried out his advance faster than planned.
Because of this haste, his plan ultimately failed. Prigozhin himself had declared that he wanted to depose Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.
The New York Times reported, citing US security circles, that a high-ranking Russian general knew about the uprising plans. It is said to be Sergei Surovikin, former commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine.
