Proxima collects seven million euros

magnetic fusion

The flagship Wendelstein X7 reactor in Greifswald, Germany was the basis for the Proxima idea.

Dusseldorf No other star is as close to the sun as Proxima Centauri. This is also the motto of the latest nuclear fusion start-up from Germany: “Our goal is to bring fusion, the power of the stars, even closer to us, in our power plants,” says Francesco Sciortino with conviction. He is co-founder and boss of Proxima.

In January, Sciortino and four other nuclear researchers founded the young company in Munich. They come from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), from the US university MIT or the research laboratory of Google X.

Like the German competitors Marvel Fusion and Focused Energy, the Proxima researchers want to advance the breakthrough in nuclear fusion. In 2031, Germany should have its first power plant that “produces more energy than it consumes,” explains Sciortino. The start-up raised seven million euros in a first round of financing. Funders include tech investor UVC Partners and High-Tech Gründerfonds.
