Dusseldorf The new episode of Handelsblatt Disrupt will be moderated this week by Deputy Editor-in-Chief Kirsten Ludowig. She hosts the Handelsblatt Rethink Work podcast and talks to behavioral economist Armin Falk about people’s motives in decision-making situations, moral conflicts and the question of why people often fail on their own in everyday life. Falk’s answer: “People are not moral superheroes.”
The Bonn economics professor explains the influence of character, the individual situation and feelings such as envy on decisions.
In his view, there are two types of envy, good and bad. “Good envy” is productive, it motivates people to make an effort to get better, for example at work or in sports.
The “evil envy” on the other hand is destructive, it tempts people to destroy the lead of others. According to Falk, there is only one way out of this form of envy: love, namely the positive recognition of the other person and the acceptance that he or she is one step further than oneself.
