Frankfurt The US payment service Paypal again increased its number of customers in Germany last year. Paypal now has 32 million active customer accounts, as the company announced on request. That’s an increase of ten percent.
Since the end of 2015, PayPal has almost doubled the number of customers. In 2021, however, the increase was lower than a year earlier.
In 2020, the number of customers increased by 3.5 million. Both consumers and retailers are included.
Paypal is the second most popular payment method for online shopping in Germany. Consumers prefer to pay for their online purchases by invoice. This is followed by credit cards and direct debit, which are often used by the online retailer Amazon, for example.

The Swedish payment service provider Klarna, which offers invoice and installment purchases, also has many users in Germany. It has 50 million private users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Paypal stock has plummeted
Like other payment companies, PayPal and Klarna are benefiting from the global e-commerce boom. With the outbreak of the corona pandemic, online shopping has become even more popular. However, investors have recently been skeptical about Paypal. The share, which had been rising for a long time, has fallen by around 60 percent since last summer.
Klarna is the most valuable start-up in Europe with a valuation of almost 46 billion dollars. A possible IPO has been speculated for a long time.
PayPal registered around 426 million active customer accounts worldwide at the end of 2021. The group not only counts PayPal accounts from consumers and retailers, but also customers from other PayPal services such as the money transfer service Xoom and the provider of card readers, Zettle. The company considers users who have used PayPal for a transaction at least once in the past twelve months to be active customers.
Most of the customers are private consumers. 34 million of the world’s accounts, or eight percent, go back to merchants. If this ratio is also applied in Germany, the result is almost 2.6 million dealer customers and a good 29.4 million private customers.
