Berlin By the end of May this year, only 1.09 billion euros had flowed out of the Bundeswehr’s special fund of 100 billion euros. This emerges from documents classified as “classified” by the Federal Finance Agency to the Federal Finance Committee of the German Bundestag, which are available to the Handelsblatt.

Not only because of this low outflow, budget politicians in the Bundestag no longer expect that Germany will still reach the two percent target for defense spending in this electoral term. A third of the funds from the special fund are now tied up.

Many armaments orders would only be completed after 2025 due to the long lead time and would therefore only then become due as an expense, such as the purchase of the F-35 fighter jets, several budget politicians told the Handelsblatt.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced the establishment of the Bundeswehr special fund after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in his turning point speech in the Bundestag. The Bundeswehr is to be better equipped with the special fund.
