Omicron Booster: Pharmaceutical companies are working on booster vaccinations

Frankfurt According to experts, while the omicron wave is gradually peaking and many countries are shutting down infection control measures, leading vaccine developers are becoming more and more convinced that additional booster vaccinations will be useful and necessary in the long term in the fight against the pandemic. Modified versions of the previous Covid vaccines adapted to the omicron variant are coming to the fore.

The basis for the strategies is, on the one hand, the experience that previous vaccines lose their protective effect against omicron infections relatively quickly. On the other hand, there is also the expectation that new, possibly more dangerous variants of the virus will most likely emerge from the omicron variant, which has meanwhile become dominant worldwide, and that an omicron vaccine is therefore best able to offer protection against such variants.
