Berlin, Brussels The most recent meeting of the G7 finance ministers was dominated by the Ukraine war. The Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal and his Finance Minister Sergej Marchenko were on the Petersberg in Bonn last week and described the situation in their country.
It was also discussed how Ukraine could be rebuilt after the war. The conference was already drawing to a close on Friday afternoon, when suddenly an idea that was as interesting as it was explosive was being discussed, about which the public has not yet heard anything.
Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland told her six fellow ministers that she was receiving calls from Russian oligarchs who were on Western sanctions lists and were very unhappy about them.
And by no means just because of the inconveniences of travel restrictions and asset freezes. They too, the oligarchs, are critical of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, but cannot distance themselves from the invasion because of the threat of reprisals from the Kremlin.
