Berlin The new federal government is coming under pressure in the face of a feared Russian invasion of Ukraine because of the controversial Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2. The US government is demanding that Berlin stop the pipeline from operating in the event of an attack on Ukraine. But the new coalition is divided over the question of how to deal with the advance of the transatlantic ally. Above all, the SPD and the Greens are pulling in different directions.

For the likely future Green Party leader Omid Nouripour, the matter is clear. He is convinced that blocking would be the logical consequence of existing agreements. The approval of the German side to a blocking is nothing more than “the agreed line in the Biden-Merkel deal,” said Nouripour to the Handelsblatt. The US President and the then Chancellor agreed in July to respond to “Russian aggression and destructive activities” with “effective measures including sanctions”.
