Wolfsburg Volkswagen will probably build a completely new factory for its latest generation of electric cars (“Trinity Project”) at its headquarters in Wolfsburg. “This is the most promising alternative,” said VW brand boss Ralf Brandstätter at a press conference on Tuesday. A decision has not yet been made. The Supervisory Board will pass a resolution at its next meeting on December 9th.

According to Brandstätter, the automaker is also looking into converting the main plant, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. But there is much to be said for a new building (“greenfield”). In this way, the necessary, significantly higher productivity targets could be achieved much sooner than in a plant built decades ago. “We are currently discussing this with everyone involved in the group,” Brandstätter continued.

The VW brand boss would build the new factory in the Wolfsburg region in the immediate vicinity of the main factory. Employees from today’s Volkswagen factory could then switch to the new production facility relatively easily and without great effort.
