New terminal worth only half the construction costs

Berlin Not even all the bills have been paid for the problematic new capital city airport. But the Schönefeld BER main terminal, which cost 5.4 billion euros and has only been in operation for a year, is now only worth around 2.5 billion euros, according to the federal government.

This “residual book value”, as of April 30, 2021, is mentioned in a previously unpublished report by the Federal Ministry of Finance of October 28, 2021 for the housekeepers of the parliamentary groups. The paper was available to the “Tagesspiegel”. The author is the parliamentary state secretary Bettina Hagedorn from the house of Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD).

The reason for the loss in value, which already led to the first special depreciation in the balance sheet for 2020 at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) – and to a loss of billions – is the BER breakdown story. The airport, which went into operation in 2020 after 14 years of construction and devoured a total of 6.8 billion euros, cost as much as two airports.
