Washington She was powerful, combative, almost hit the drum. She inspired and even joked at times. Anyone interested in getting a glimpse of what US Vice President Kamala Harris could bring to the 2024 campaign saw it at a rally at Howard University this week on abortion rights.

After two years of scripted and uneven performances that often displeased Democrats and delighted Republicans, she seems more relaxed, energetic and prone to speaking out of the box following her trip to Africa in March.

“This is the vice president as she gets to know America for the first time,” says Laphonza Butler, a former adviser to Harris, with a view to the second election campaign that is now beginning alongside Joe Biden.
