On the way to the palace, Zelensky’s column passed cheering Ukrainian citizens. They waited in the rain to welcome Selenski. Maria Hryzkevych, a Ukrainian resident of Italy, said the president travels a lot for the benefit of Ukrainians “to fight and to find more help because we need help.”
For security reasons, the exact course of Zelenski’s stay was not made public. The Vatican only confirmed the meeting with the Pope shortly before the expected arrival in Rome. Selenski was expected to be in Rome for several hours. It is assumed that he will then travel to Berlin.
According to a media report, a no-fly zone was ordered over Rome to ensure safety during the stay. In addition, police snipers were placed on tall buildings.
Upon arrival at Ciampino Airport, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani was there to greet Selenski, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. Tajani told reporters his country will continue to provide full support to Ukraine and work towards a just peace that protects Ukraine’s independence.
