Stuttgart The EQS is hardly on the road when Mercedes is already preparing the start of the next offshoot on the EVA2 electric platform: the Swabians will be bringing the EQE to the market this summer.

They are about a year ahead of the generation change in the conventional E-Class. This was announced by head of the series, Christoph Starzynski, during the final set-up drives.

The second classic sedan from the all-electric Mercedes range uses the same technology as the EQS, but is half a size smaller. At 4.95 meters, it measures around 30 centimeters less in length and the wheelbase is around 10 centimeters shorter at 3.11 meters. In addition, instead of the tailgate attached to the roof of the EQS, there is a conventional trunk with a volume of 430 liters.

Because of the limited space, the EQE only runs on the smaller of the two battery variants from the electric flagship, according to series manager Starzynski. However, this already offers a net capacity of around 90 kWh – and thus an above-average standard range of 660 kilometers. It is charged with up to 170 kW, so that under optimal conditions, electricity flows for 250 kilometers within 15 minutes.

It starts with an EQE 350, whose rear engine has an output of 215 kW/292 hp. Other engine variants are to follow later, then also with all-wheel drive.

In terms of driving, the EQE should differ from the EQS as well as from the conventional E and S classes, Starzynski promises. He refers to a very special set-up, for example for the optional rear-axle steering or the air suspension. In the quartet of the Mercedes luxury class, the EQE should become the most committed, handiest and most dynamic model.

The EQE aims at the progressives among the E-Class customers. But the practitioners will only reach the electric sedan to a limited extent. Because unlike the combustion engines, the EQE will not be available as a station wagon. However, customers do not have to do without more storage space and variability: Mercedes is preparing the EQE as an SUV as a sustainable alternative to the GLE and as a replacement for the station wagon.
