Munich Ergun Lümali emphasizes that Mercedes-Benz has stood for quality, safety and luxury for more than 135 years. The influential head of the works council of the car manufacturer has no problem with the board of directors around CEO Ola Källenius deleting three compact cars from the portfolio and wanting to grow in the future with particularly noble and expensive models such as the S-Class, Maybach GLS or G-Class.
Lümali only demands a turnaround from management in one central point. The trend of recent years to outsource as many components as possible to supposedly cheaper suppliers must stop. “Insourcing is a key issue for me,” Lümali told Handelsblatt. “Luxury must also stand for more in-house production.”
Mercedes shouldn’t make itself too dependent on partners like graphics card manufacturer Nvidia. “We will therefore certainly continue to expand our area around the MB.OS operating system,” announced Lümali. “The expansion will continue in Sindelfingen as well as in our global hubs.”
