MediaTek, which has been active in the entry-level and mid-range smartphone market in the past years, introduced the Dimensity series in 2020. Targeting flagship models with the Dimensity 9000 family, the company managed to attract the attention of smartphone manufacturers.

Introduced in 2021, the Dimensity 9000 model surpassed its rival thanks to 17 percent higher memory bandwidth compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Heating and performance problems in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model caused Qualcomm to fall behind in the competition.
