Mark Zuckerberg threatened to close Facebook and Instagram!

The European Union went head-to-head with another US company. In the past, the EU has been making some resistances to impose their own laws on many technology giants, from Apple to Google. This time, it seems that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp’s new umbrella company Meta has taken its target. But the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, insists on not backing down. Here are the details…

Facebook and Instagram may be shut down in EU!

The European Union has come to the fore in the past period when it fined some brands in large sums on the grounds that they did not comply with the laws and rules. The reason for this is that technology companies have to comply with the rules of the countries they want to exist in. Otherwise, they have to be officially withdrawn.

This situation is currently experiencing Meta, where Mark Zuckerberg is the CEO. In the past, the EU has given very strict instructions on data privacy to many companies, including Facebook and Instagram.

In this sense, what Europe really wanted was for all the data of its citizens available online to remain within the borders of the EU. Therefore, he asked Meta to keep the personal data of hundreds of millions of European Facebook and Instagram users within the borders of the EU rather than to the USA or data banks located in different countries.

But Meta says the ability to process user data across countries is paramount to both its current and future operations and its ad targeting business. Therefore, it wants to use all data under its own roof as it sees fit. But the decision of the EU judiciary demands the opposite.

Meta said the following about this issue in the Securities and Exchange Commission annual report published recently:

If we are unable to transfer data between countries and regions in which we operate, or if we are restricted from sharing data between our products and services, it may affect our ability to deliver our services and our ability to target ads. This therefore explains why we will not be able to offer some of our most important products and services in Europe, including Facebook and Instagram.

Then, the company responded to questions from the press as follows:

We urge regulators (with reference to the EU) to take a proportional and pragmatic approach to minimize disruption to thousands of businesses that rely in good faith on mechanisms like Facebook to transfer data securely.

In many countries, including Turkey, the trade made via Facebook and Instagram has a very large market. In fact, many businesses may have to shut down if these platforms do not close. In addition, many companies that sell on their own sites manage to attract users by placing various advertisements on these channels.

Therefore, this threat made by Meta will not only affect people who use these platforms to socialize or share photos. Of course, many people say that Zuckerberg took such an attitude to push the EU back. But we will see the result soon.
