On February 6, two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6, which caused great destruction in 10 provinces in the Southeastern Anatolia region, caused the most loss of life in the history of the Republic. After the destruction caused by the earthquake, the search and rescue activity, which continued for 8 days and participated in by dozens of countries, was started. An earthquake of 7.7 magnitude occurred at 04:17 in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş province. Surrounding provinces, especially Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Diyarbakır, Malatya and Şanlıurfa, were also affected by the earthquake.
After more than a hundred aftershocks of up to 6.6, another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 (revised as 7.7) according to AFAD data and 7.5 magnitude according to Kandilli Observatory data occurred at 13:24.
As of now, on the evening of the 8th day, the number of dead has reached 32 thousand and the number of injured 81 thousand. It was said that in addition to the 6 thousand 444 destroyed buildings, 29 thousand 924 would turn into debris in a third earthquake. Nearly one hundred and fifty thousand people living here were evacuated.
But many had to leave behind all their belongings, especially their identity cards. For this reason, it was announced that earthquake victims who lost their identity cards during or after the earthquake can renew it free of charge.
