Berlin For Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD), the planned return to the debt brake from 2023 is subject to the economic situation. “If we slide into a massive recession, the question of whether the debt brake should be observed must be reassessed in the coalition,” said Heil of the OM media group (Saturday).

So far, the plans for the federal budget for 2023 have assumed that the debt brake will be adhered to. However, the Basic Law provides for exceptions for disasters and economic crises.

“We don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks. I’ll mention the Russian gas embargo here,” said Heil. In that case, a situation could arise “in which you have to discuss it again”.

Lindner is sticking to the debt brake

After three exceptional years due to the corona pandemic, the debt brake anchored in the Basic Law is to be observed again in the 2023 federal budget. This provides for only a small net borrowing.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), on the other hand, confirmed that the federal government should again comply with the debt brake anchored in the Basic Law in 2023. He told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Saturday): “Solid state finances, no politics on credit and reduced state spending help to fight inflation. We can no longer afford more and more debt given the cost of interest.”
