Dusseldorf There is a truism among runners that every marathon begins with a first step. My personal marathon started about a year ago in front of a pipe warehouse in the east of Düsseldorf. It’s on the way from my home to the Handelsblatt editorial office.
One January morning, I had the brightest idea of jogging to and from work—good resolutions. I like to run and claim to be able to motivate myself to some extent.
But as I walked past trucks – parked and moving – on this dark, cold and windy morning and spotted a stop sign in the distance that said “Röhrenlager” I thought: “Dark, cold – and toughest industrial area, phew! If I pull this off, I’ll definitely have enough motivation for more than a few morning jogs.”
