Investors have to live with uncertainty

The co-team leader for investments in the finance department of the Handelsblatt explains why analysts’ expectations for quarterly profits are currently quite pessimistic.

Frankfurt The third quarter earnings season is now in full swing. No fewer than around 180 interim reports from companies from the European stock index Stoxx 600 are on the program this week. The financial sector is prominently represented with Deutsche Bank, UBS, HSBC and Credit Suisse.

However, groups such as Unilever, Royal Unibrew and Carrefour are also important, and their reports should give an insight into the mood of European consumers. At the chemical giants Linde and BASF, investors are primarily looking at the increased energy prices.

Can a direction for the markets be read from the collected company figures? The situation on the stock markets is never easy, but it is particularly complex these days. Given the rampant recession fears, analysts’ expectations for quarterly earnings are quite pessimistic.
