Interest rate concerns and the Ukraine crisis unsettle US investors

Dusseldorf Fears of an escalation in the Ukraine crisis and interest rate fears keep US investors on their toes. The Dow Jones index fell 0.8 percent to 34,474 points at the beginning of the week. The broader S&P 500 was also down at 4389 points. The index of the technology exchange Nasdaq showed little change at 13,773 points.

Statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who suggested continuing diplomatic efforts to obtain security guarantees from the West, eased the tension somewhat.

“That has allayed some concerns and gave the market some hope that perhaps the Ukraine issue could be resolved through diplomatic channels,” said Robert Pavlik, portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth. The US volatility index, also known as Wall Street’s fear indicator, was still at its highest level in almost three weeks.
