LexisNexis disclosed in the latest version of its annual patent portfolios and related market values research report that 5G deals ranging from $1 million to $100 million are being closed weekly, but said it was difficult to define quantities and market shares due to a lack of transparency.
In fact, LexisNexis examined which standard-essential patents are best suited to dominate the emerging 5G market. As a result of this research, Huawei, Qualcomm and Samsung were ranked as the top three companies in terms of quantity and quality, respectively. Ericsson, Nokia, LG Electronics, ZTE, Oppo, NTT and InterDigital were right behind them.

The company that conducted the analysis noted that experts classify 10 percent to 20 percent of declared 5G standard-essential patents as truly essential. It also ranked the top 50 patent vendors through internal evaluation of patent values and contributions to 3GPP standards and “pure” posting counts.
As a result, Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia were among the companies that made the strongest contributions to 5G standards. Globally, it was observed that the USA has more than 28 thousand 5G patent families, China has approximately 26 thousand patents, and the whole of Europe has almost 15 thousand patents.
When we look at the overall total; As of July 2023, the number of 5G patent families announced exceeded 60 thousand. Approximately 30 thousand of them belong to Europe and the USA. In other words, it is observed that there is an increase of approximately 5 thousand annually. On the other hand, leadership in this field is in the hands of China and Huawei as a company.
