How the hacking superpower North Korea is threatening the crypto world

Tokyo 2022 is a terrible year for the crypto world. This is not only due to a long series of scandals such as the collapse of the FTX exchange, but also to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, at least according to Western law enforcement and crypto experts.

Because for North Korea’s crypto thieves, 2022 has been a success so far. According to calculations by the analysis house Chainanalysis, state hackers in the country are said to have stolen virtual currencies worth 840 million dollars in the first nine months of the year, more than any private or state hacking group before it.

For comparison: Chainanalysis estimates the sum of all crypto thefts worldwide in the first three quarters of 2022 at around three billion dollars. In addition to spectacular bankruptcies such as that of FTX and the resulting domino effects, North Korea has thus become one of the greatest threats to the crypto world.
