Vilnius, Berlin The man responsible for Europe’s security studied biology and wrote his thesis at Princeton University on the “Earthworm influence on the vertical distribution of slime molds in the soil”. After university, interest in small animals gave way to tanks, fighter jets and anti-aircraft weapons. Christopher Cavoli went into the military.

Today he is NATO’s highest-ranking officer and the main author of the defense plans that the alliance approved on Monday shortly before the start of its Vilnius summit. The signal that should go out from the meeting in the Lithuanian capital is: NATO is back to deterrence and classic alliance defense. Under Cavoli’s command, the Alliance faces a profound transformation. It is the largest reorganization of the European security order since the end of the Cold War.
