Dusseldorf In 2009, Angela Merkel set a big goal. The then Chancellor called for one million electric cars to be on German roads by 2020. Now, two years later than planned, Germany has achieved this goal. By the end of September, the millionth electric car will have been sold. A milestone, because plug-in or other hybrid models are not included in this calculation. But experts know that a good number of vehicles are no longer on German roads.

According to calculations by the industry consultancy Schmidt Automotive Research, almost 150,000 of the electric cars sold in Germany were exported abroad in almost new condition. “An intolerable state of affairs,” says Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management.
