How harmful is the Internet to the climate – and how can it become greener?

Dusseldorf Global data traffic doubles every 18 months. For a long time now, the Internet has not only been needed for video streaming or cloud services, refrigerators and lights can also be controlled online. In the future, Industry 4.0, autonomously driving cars or applications with artificial intelligence will further increase data consumption.

All of this requires energy. The Internet is more harmful to the climate than the general public realizes: Depending on the survey, it accounts for eight to ten percent of global electricity requirements, which would put the network in third place among the countries with the highest electricity consumption. But how can it become greener?
