How fair is the gas levy really?

Dusseldorf The gas surcharge, which will apply from October, is intended to support financially troubled gas importers such as Uniper and secure energy supplies in Germany. In the first half of the year alone, the company made a loss of more than 12 billion euros. More than 50 percent of the gas surcharge is to be transferred to Uniper alone.

But Uniper is not the only company wanting to claim additional costs when purchasing gas. A total of twelve companies want to be compensated by the gas surcharge – including corporations that have benefited from the energy crisis and made billions in profits.

“There are companies that are making good money due to the current situation,” says Handelsblatt energy reporter Catiana Krapp in the new episode of Handelsblatt Today. That is also not objectionable. “But if households that can’t do anything about the current situation are asked to pay and companies that make big profits don’t, we’ll have an acceptance problem,” says Krapp in an interview with host Anis Mičijević.

The reduction in value-added tax on gas from 19 to seven percent announced today by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is a relief, but at the moment it is not certain that the measure will be able to completely compensate for the additional burdens on consumers resulting from rising gas prices and result from the gas allocation.
