“Germany is a world champion in fear”

Dusseldorf This week, Handelsblatt Disrupt reports from the Handelsblatt Summer Camp in Munich: For two days, the future of the economy, the challenges of the present and new technologies were discussed. Among other things, editor-in-chief Sebastian Matthes and Allianz boss Oliver Bäte spoke about this.

Digitization is often misunderstood, said the CEO. And he dispelled the belief that technology alone would solve everything.

When asked about the lack of Russian gas deliveries, Bäte was optimistic: “I’m an optimist, but I think a lot is happening there.” Six months ago, it was thought that it would take two and a half years for Germany to connect the first LNG terminal to the grid . Now it will probably happen as early as the second quarter of 2023. “That means that Germany can make many things possible if it pulls itself together.”

And he adds self-critically: Germany is “world champion in being afraid” and in criticizing itself.
