German industry in the energy price trap

High energy costs

The German economy is preparing for tough months.

Dusseldorf, Berlin The dramatically rising prices for electricity and gas are becoming an ever greater competitive disadvantage for companies in Germany: “German industry is currently paying a market price for natural gas that is eight times higher than the market price in the USA,” says Christof Bauer, an energy expert at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

With his calculations, which are exclusively available to the Handelsblatt, Bauer refers to the current wholesale price for deliveries in 2023. This price is currently 270 euros per megawatt hour.

If you add taxes and duties, the gas prices in Germany and the USA differ by a factor of nine, according to Bauer. The surcharges alone, such as concession fees and network charges, to which the new gas surcharge will be added in October, are almost as high as the entire gas price in the USA. Due to the increased gas prices, less is already being produced and production is being relocated, says Bauer.
