Federal government plans new China strategy

Dusseldorf The federal government is reacting to the changed Chinese policy under Xi Jinping by developing a new China strategy. The biggest concern: China could take Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as a model and attack its neighbor Taiwan. Some experts are only talking about a question of time. An escalation of the conflict could have global consequences: A military conflict between China and the USA would be conceivable.

Against this background, the Federal Republic has to adjust the way it deals with autocracy. China is currently Germany’s most important trading partner. In the event of hardship, this dependency becomes a problem for the local economy. An example: For rare earths, Germany is more than 93 percent dependent on supplies from China. In an interview with Berlin correspondent and China expert Dana Heide, Handelsblatt Today host Lena Jesberg discusses how Germany can position itself better in this regard and learn from the mistakes it has made in dealing with Russia.
