EU sets course for defense union

Versailles, Brussels The Hall of Mirrors at Versailles has repeatedly been the scene of historical upheavals. The German Reich was founded here in 1871, and the end of the First World War was sealed in 1919. It is possible that March 11, 2022, when the EU leaders discussed the Russian attack on Ukraine in this magnificent setting, will also go down in the history books.

Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression has “fundamentally changed” the security situation in Europe, Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday at the end of the meeting. And Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) summed it up: “From my point of view, that was a very special summit. A summit in a special place, in a special time.”

The EU is reacting to Putin’s aggression against Ukraine with remarkable determination: with tough sanctions, a reorientation of energy policy – and the change from a peace project to a defense community.
