Lagos Diplomatic efforts are growing in proportion to fears of an energy emergency: the EU wants to step up its involvement in oil-rich Nigeria in order to gain independence from Russia.
Just recently, the ambassadors of Italy, Portugal, Spain, France and the EU paid a visit to the state-owned Nigerian oil and gas company NNPC. The focus was on the question: How can more natural gas from Nigeria be mobilized for Europe in the future?
In fact, the country sits on the continent’s largest oil reserves and is already Africa’s second largest gas exporter after Algeria. And the potential is far greater. What keeps Europe’s desires growing: in contrast to other resource-rich countries on the continent, Nigeria has concrete plans to pump more energy northwards.
