Berlin The general director of the French energy group Engie sees a great need for action in the European energy transition. “By 2050 we will need six times as much solar and wind power as we do today,” said Catherine MacGregor in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

At the same time, energy demand must fall by 34 percent over this period to reach the net zero emissions target. If Europe meets the renewable energy targets five years too late, it will have a drastic impact on the climate.

Unlike the French state-owned company EDF, Engie plans to phase out nuclear power. By 2025, the company wants to have green power plants with a total generation capacity of 50 gigawatts – a quantity that the German competitor RWE will probably not achieve until 2030.
