Washington Texan Michael McCaul plays a central role in the future of American aid to Ukraine. The Republican chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives. He absolutely wants to prevent skeptics from his own ranks from standing in the way of the billions in support.
“Nobody can be indifferent when children are murdered,” McCaul said this week. In the near future he wants to fly in the Ukrainian prosecutor Andriy Kostin so that he can “descriptively describe” the Russian war crimes.
The fact that McCaul considers this persuasion work necessary shows that the USA’s aid to Ukraine can no longer be taken for granted. Although US President Joe Biden swears by his “iron support” for Ukraine during his visits to Kiev and Warsaw, the flow of money from Washington could be in danger as early as the summer. Since the war began, the US has approved $113 billion in military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
