ECB Director Fabio Panetta calls for more flexibility in monetary policy

Frankfurt Fabio Panetta is one of the most prominent advocates of a soft monetary policy on the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB). In the Handelsblatt interview, the Italian advocates leaving open the extent of further interest rate hikes after the next meeting in early February. The central banker considers any unrestricted determination that is not tied to conditions, for example with regard to economic development, to be wrong.

ECB President Christine Lagarde announced further interest rate hikes of half a percentage point in December. On Monday, she reiterated that the central bank is targeting further rate hikes.
