Berlin Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) summarizes a months-long dispute in a nutshell: “In view of the major challenges facing our country, intensive consultations within the federal government were initially necessary.” to decide on the draft budget for the coming year.
Lindner’s cabinet colleagues know only too well about these “intensive deliberations”, after all they sat on the other side and wrestled with the finance minister for weeks.
Many did not want to accept the spending limits. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had to get involved in the negotiations and hold some budget talks with Lindner and the respective ministers. The bill speaks of a “comprehensive negotiation process”.
