Former US President Donald Trump

Even if Donald Trump is not indicted by the Justice Department, his position as a renewed presidential candidate is being weakened more and more.

Washington After the turn of the year, the 2024 presidential election campaign begins in the USA. It is very early, but the field of candidates still has to be filled. Not even incumbent President Joe Biden has declared his candidacy again. But behind the scenes, all signs point to campaigning, the campaigns are getting ready. Above all, that of Donald Trump, who wants to get back into the race for the White House.

Against this background, it is a strong signal that the investigative committee into the storming of the Capitol has recommended an indictment against Trump. The former president is a threat to the US, he proved that around January 6, 2021.

The attack on the seat of the US Congress was a black day and a disgrace to the most powerful Western democracy. Anyone who followed the work of the committee must have been appalled: by the violence of the mob of Trump supporters, by the shocking inaction of the President. But also about the statements made by his employees and confidants, who swore they wanted to stop Trump. None of them did.

U-committees are considered cumbersome and tedious, but in this case the work of the body is a testimony of the times – which can hopefully act as a warning for all democracies. As of January 6, the committee is ultimately powerless because it has no criminal powers.

Apart from a few exceptions, the Republicans have also withdrawn from the educational work. In a few weeks, the new Congress will meet, with a Republican majority in the House of Representatives – not a few of the MPs are ardent Trumpists.

A staging as a spectacle

Nevertheless, the impact of the U-Committee should not be underestimated, especially not in the TV-savvy American society. The panel staged the hearings as a TV spectacle, which is likely to have left a lasting impression on the audience. Undecided swing voters might think twice about voting for Trump again, especially after the last midterm election, in which Trump candidates lost in a row.

There was never one decisive event that made Trump disappear from the political scene. Maybe that clap of thunder will never happen. It is quite possible that the US Department of Justice will decide against indictment. The numerous criminal and civil investigations and lawsuits that are already underway against Trump could also have no consequences. It is even conceivable that Trump will again be nominated as a candidate by his party.

But with each passing day this scenario becomes less likely. Trump is experiencing a crash in installments.
