The critically acclaimed video game “Death Stranding” is preparing to make its way to the big screen, as A24 studio, known for Academy Award-winning films such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, is collaborating with Kojima Productions for a live-action feature film adaptation.

The announcement, which A24 first hinted at via a new t-shirt featuring the A24 logo in the style of Death Stranding, has now been officially confirmed by Kojima Productions.
The film will chronicle the mysterious event known as ‘Death Stranding’, a cataclysmic event that blurs the boundaries between life and death and brings nightmarish creatures to a world teetering on the brink of collapse. Hideo Kojima, the director behind the original game, expressed his excitement at partnering with A24, praising the studio’s unique presence and innovative storytelling. Kojima underlined the distinctiveness of A24’s films and how they have inspired his own work over the years.

More importantly, Kojima emphasized that the film adaptation of Death Stranding is not intended to be a direct adaptation of the game. Instead, the goal is to create a cinematic experience that appeals not only to fans of the game, but also to a broader audience of movie buffs.
The original video game, released in 2019, featured a quality cast including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. While the game was praised for its ambitious story and world, its gameplay mechanics were highly criticized and it was labeled as an interactive movie. In short, reviews were mixed.
Although Kojima will contribute to the production, supervision, and design and content of the film adaptation, he has announced that he will not personally direct the film.
