Taipei Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has no doubts. “China is preparing for war. And many preparations seem to be geared towards Taiwan,” Wu told Handelsblatt shortly before the G7 summit in Japan. China’s threats against Taiwan will play an important role there. Beijing’s rulers see Taiwan as a breakaway province that should be annexed by force if necessary.
This threat is taken seriously in the EU and Germany. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock repeatedly warns of an escalation. Berlin stresses that it would condemn a violent change in the status quo in the region. This wording is a signal to China not to launch any military action.
