Washington, NY The US government launched the first round of funding for a giant chip offensive on Tuesday. Semiconductor manufacturers can apply for funding totaling 39 billion US dollars. However, the subsidies are linked to strict regulations, because chip manufacturers have to meet specific conditions in return.
Among other things, the companies should refrain from buying back shares, transfer excess profits and improve childcare for their employees, according to a statement by the US Department of Commerce.
The American chip offensive thus goes far beyond mere promotion of the semiconductor industry. Rather, as the plans suggest, the subsidies intervene in the business model.
