Dusseldorf One of the most important indicators for Volkswagen is not found in any balance sheet: the capacity utilization of the plants. Five-year plans are knitted around the production facilities, investments are distributed, jobs are assigned and eliminated. Exclusive figures from the data service provider Marklines, which are available to the Handelsblatt, show how underemployed some German VW locations were in 2022.
According to this, just under 450,000 vehicles were manufactured in the Wolfsburg main plant, in peak years the one million car mark was targeted. Production in Emden was also only running at half load. 218,000 vehicles were manufactured at the Zwickau electrical site; around 300,000 are technically possible here.
