Bafin files criminal charges against data center operators

Frankfurt The financial supervisory authority Bafin has filed a criminal complaint against the Frankfurt data center operator Northern Data. “In connection with Northern Data, we filed charges with the public prosecutor in Frankfurt am Main for alleged market manipulation,” said a spokeswoman on Friday afternoon when asked by the Handelsblatt.

The spokeswoman did not want to give more details and referred to the public prosecutor. This initially did not respond to request. First the “Wirtschaftswoche” reported on the move.

According to financial circles, the supervisors are bothered by Northern Data’s extremely rosy self-portrayal in the past few months, which contrasts with terrifyingly poor business figures that have now been published. An excessively positive external image can generally be misused to mislead market participants – in such a case, the supervisors are required to intervene.
