The Apple Event, where leaks, news and discourses as well as various research and documents are clarified, will be held on Tuesday, September 12 at 20:00 this year.

iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

Apple will continue with four iPhone series in 2023, with the standard iPhone 15 models going to be available in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes, similar to last year. The ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus will look nearly identical to the iPhone 14 and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus, except for the USB-C port, which is a big exception.

Instead of a Lightning port, ‌iPhone 15‌ models will use USB-C, which allows iPhones, iPads, and Macs to share the charger and charging cable. Apple is making this change due to regulatory changes in Europe that require electronic devices to have a standard charging port, but USB-C technology will be implemented worldwide.

Last year’s iPhones continued to feature notches, but this is going away with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Instead, the new iPhones will free up more screen space by adopting Dynamic Island, which Apple first used for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus will receive ‌Dynamic Island‌, other display technologies such as ProMotion refresh rate and always-on display will be limited to the Pro models. There is another minor design change regarding the glass back. Frosted glass has historically been a feature of the Pro iPhone lineup, but the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus are expected to have a frosted glass back instead of a glossy glass back.

Apple is planning new colors for the iPhone 15 series, and rumors so far suggest we’ll see blue, a light greenish yellow, white and black, a coral color mixed with orange and pink. We could see color-matched braided USB-C cables compatible with every new iPhone.

Camera technology will get a significant update with the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus adopting a 48 Megapixel main camera with f/1.6 aperture for higher resolution images and improved quality in low lighting conditions. There will also be a 12 Megapixel Ultra Wide camera, but this is the same camera on the iPhone 14 models without the update.

New Qualcomm 5G modem chips are expected and we may see improved signal, lower latency and better power efficiency. Apple is developing a new A17 chip for the iPhone 15 Pro models, but the standard ‌iPhone 15‌ models will receive the A16 chip currently found in the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max.

So far we haven’t heard any rumors of improvements to battery life, Wi-Fi speeds or RAM for the standard iPhone 15 models, and prices are expected to remain the same.

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

Many of the exciting new changes and feature additions this year are coming to the Pro models instead of the standard ‌iPhone 15‌ models. Like last year, we expect two Pro iPhones, the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and the 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to have some minor design updates, especially as Apple introduces thinner, curved bezels and a new titanium material for the case. Instead of stainless steel, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and Pro Max will have titanium in colors such as silver, titanium gray, black and navy blue. Titanium will have a more matte finish than stainless steel, plus iPhone 15 Pro models may be 10 percent lighter as titanium weighs less than steel.

Although there are rumors about the volume button changes that Apple tried, the volume button update did not yield any results and there will be no change in this one either. But Apple is expected to replace the mute switch with a mute button that will have multiple functions, similar to the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra.

Code in iOS 17 shows that the button can turn on Silent Mode, activate Camera, turn on Flashlight, enable Shortcut, turn on Focus mode, launch the Translate app, launch Voice Memo, and more.

Like the iPhone 15 models, the iPhone 15 Pro models will also receive USB-C, but the Pro models are said to support faster USB 3.2 (20 Gb/s) or Thunderbolt (40 Gb/s) transfer speeds. Some iPhone 15 models (probably Pro models) are said to support charging speeds of up to 35W.

Apple is making minor improvements to the Wide Angle and Telephoto cameras of both Pro models to improve low-light performance, but the Main 48-megapixel camera is not expected to see any improvement. The ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max will have a periscope zoom function for the telephoto lens, the biggest new camera feature. Optical zoom is currently limited to 3x, but with periscope technology, Apple is expected to bring it to 5x or 6x zoom.

The standard ‌iPhone 15‌ models will use the A16 chip, while the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max will be equipped with the A17 chip built on a new 3 nanometer process. This will be the first chip to be built on a new node in several years and will provide significant performance and efficiency improvements. An increase in battery life is expected.

Apple will use the same 5G Qualcomm chip across the entire ‌iPhone 15‌ series, and there are also rumors of a new U2 Ultra Wideband chip that will integrate with the Vision Pro headset coming next year. Pro models will receive Wi-Fi 6E, the newest and fastest Wi-Fi protocol that works with the 6GHz band. Up to 2TB of storage may be available, and the Pro models will have 8GB of RAM, up from the 6GB in last year’s Pro models.

The ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and Pro Max have a rich feature set, and rumors suggest that this will bring a price increase. Many sources said that Apple is planning a price increase, but it is not yet clear how much. New models can cost $100 more; in this case, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ starts at $1,099, and the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max starts at $1,199.
