Android Auto message summaries are coming

Artificial intelligence message summaries, introduced with the latest updated version of Android Auto, were announced earlier this year. Long message summaries where Google Assistant reads them all out loud are finally here.

Android Auto message summaries finally appear to be widely available

When you open the app for the first time after updating to version 11.4, you’ll see a notification explaining that Google message digests are now available. You don’t need to accept this, but you’ll also get a shortcut that lets you go to settings to manage the feature.

AI message digests work on long messages over 40 words. For shorter messages, Google Assistant still reads the entire content.

When you trigger an AI message digest for the first time, Google will notify you that it has created a summary and with this information the content may be slightly inaccurate. While the message is being read, a silent notification appears on your phone, indicating that the summary is being created.

When read aloud, the more than 100-word test message is condensed into approximately 15 words. Many details are not conveyed in the process, but the general meaning is preserved. Of course, the results may vary depending on the situation. After the summary is read, a notification appears in Android Auto asking for feedback on the summary.

If you do not want artificial intelligence summaries, the feature can be easily disabled in Android Auto settings. The feature is still called “AI Message Summary” on the phone and in Android Auto’s in-car settings, but there’s now also a new toggle for “Notifications with Assistant.”
