Amazon and Disney are catching up

Dusseldorf Fierce competition, weaknesses in content strategy, and high subscription prices: Experts cite a number of reasons why streaming pioneer Netflix’s growth story is currently stuck in pause mode. In the second quarter, Netflix lost 970,000 subscribers — an all-time high. The stock is down around 60 percent for the year.

Amazon, Disney and Apple are now playing an increasingly important role in the streaming market and are increasingly putting Netflix under pressure. In the current episode of Handelsblatt Today, US correspondent Felix Holtermann talks to host Anis Mičijević about the quarterly figures of the streaming giant and the outlook for the share.

Holtermann is certain: “In order to build on the old successes, Netflix must now do one thing above all – deliver.” In terms of content, but also with a view to new, advertising-financed subscription models.

In addition: The federal government is taking a 30 percent stake in the ailing gas supplier Uniper. Arno Schütze, Handelsblatt expert for mergers and acquisitions, talks about the most important cornerstones of the rescue package and explains why gas customers must expect significant additional burdens from October 1st.
