new York In the USA, more than 750 Tesla drivers have complained to the traffic safety authority about their car suddenly braking. The vehicles with the semi-automated driving system braked sharply repeatedly and without warning until the car stopped, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wrote in early May in a letter to Eddie Gates, Tesla quality manager, published on Friday.

Sometimes the brakes were applied unintentionally several times during a single journey. Many drivers were afraid that other cars could hit them in the rear in such an incident. Tesla should comment on the allegations by June 20th.

The US traffic safety agency NHTSA said that nothing was known about accidents or injuries caused by the incorrect braking. It began investigating more than 350 complaints in February and examined an estimated 416,000 Model 3 and Y vehicles equipped with automatic driver assistance systems that brake and steer independently, including cruise control and autopilot.

The authority asked Tesla to clarify whether the self-driving system and the automatic braking system were activated when such incidents occurred. The electric car manufacturer should also give her all reports of incorrect braking that he himself received.

“The number of complaints in such a short period of time is high, suggesting that NHTSA may be expanding its investigation,” said Michael Brooks, chief of the US consumer organization Center for Auto Safety. “Hundreds of Tesla owners complain to us each month about incorrect activations of their braking system, many do not refer their complaints to the NHTSA.”
