X (Twitter) Officially Stopped NFT Profile Photo Service!

Social media giant X launched last year in January 2022. NFT has stopped its profile picture service. The reaction of the crypto community to this move, which Kraken’s founder Jesse Powell described as “a step back for the industry”, drew attention.

X social media platform, purchased by Elon Musk, attracted attention with its move to remove the NFT profile feature. Previously, X allowed its subscribers to use an Ethereum-based NFT as their profile picture on X. X, when it was known as Twitter, activated NFTs and Bitcoin (BTC) tips in September 2021. Introduced in January 2022, the NFT profile extension expanded in October 2022 when the social media company introduced “NFT Tweet Tiles.”

Developer Jimmy Song said on X, “The hexagon NFT profile images are gone from X. “Prices have dropped by 90%+,” he commented. “Where are all those marketers and VCs now who were talking about how NFTs were a great thing with so many uses 3 years ago?” Song asked.

Udi Wertheimer, co-founder of Taproot Wizards, joined the conversation on the subject and jokingly said, “X (Twitter) is removing support for legacy Ethereum off-chain beacons.” Kraken founder Jesse Powell also raised the issue. “Cutting support for NFT profile images on @X is a step backwards for the industry. “Reduced benefit is always a loss,” he commented.
