The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has officially ended, almost six months after industrial action began. Writers will start returning to work as of today.
However, the end of the strike does not mean that film shooting in Hollywood will immediately accelerate.
The WGA first announced a new interim agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on Sunday and stated that the Negotiations Committee, WGAW Board of Directors and WGAE Council would put it to a vote. The results are in and all three bodies voted unanimously to recommend the exceptional agreement to WGA members on Tuesday.
After 148 days, the authors agreed on these terms:
– Minimum room size,
– Wage increases,
– Prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence,
– Disclosure of broadcast figures along with remaining fees,
– Guaranteed 2nd step for screenwriters,
– Scenario fees for staff writers,
– Full retirement pay for editorial teams.

Hollywood, the center of the cinema world, is facing the biggest strike in recent years. Along with the strikes, thousands of artists will stop working.
This is undoubtedly excellent news for writers, but the matter is not yet completely settled. The new agreement will now be sent to WGA members for approval, with a vote on approval scheduled for October 2-9.
Given the Negotiating Committee’s satisfaction with the terms of the agreement, they are unlikely to reject the hard-won deal. Still, it looks like it will take a few months for filming to regain its previous pace.

The WGA also released the entire 94-page agreement on Tuesday, and members immediately began reviewing and celebrating it. The estimated value of the new deal is $233 million annually, according to the WGA. This figure is not the $429 million per year requested by the WGA. But it’s nearly three times the $86 million a year AMPTP is trying to reach a deal with.
