Women’s football: Germany sensationally beats world champions USA Sports

Our soccer players bang world champions USA away

This crew just doesn’t stop making fun!

Three months after the runner-up title in Europe and half a year before the World Cup, the German soccer team beat the world champion USA 2-1 in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

A sensation, because the Americans around the superstars Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan had previously been unbeaten in 71 home games.

The decision in favor of the strong German team in the 89th minute: Jule Brand, who had just been named the best young player in Europe, hung up for Paulina Krumbiegel. The talent of TSG Hoffenheim slams the ball under the crossbar!

Our EM heroes started strong, had the first chances and didn’t let the Americans get into the game. Lina Magull and Alexandra Popp could have taken the lead.

But then the US women overran the shaky German defense more and more often and had three great chances before the break to score the first goal. The strong goalkeeper Merle Frohms and the latte prevented a deficit.

Curious then the 52nd minute: USA corner, Lindsey Horan hit the post, but Germany countered. A shot by Klara Bühl landed first on the post, then on the back of US goalkeeper Casey Murphy and finally in the goal. 1:0!

The surprise was close, because after the lead, the DFB girls were close to the decision. Chantal Hagel and Laura Freigang gave top chances. There was little to see from the USA in the second half.

But then football icon Rapinoe shocked our eleven! In the 85th minute, the 37-year-old, who has done so much for (bonus) justice in women’s football, scored after a template from Morgan.

But our heroines didn’t let that throw them off course – and hit back ice-cold.

“We showed a great mentality. The pace was enormous, things went on and on,” said national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg after the game.

The big downer: ZDF couldn’t keep up with the level of the fast-paced encounter. In the women’s soccer Bundesliga, viewership records are being broken all the time when the public broadcaster decided not to show the game on television but only on the Internet. And that at kick-off in the middle of the night. Instead of our soccer players, a repeat of the “Bergdoktor” ran on ZDF. Voss-Tecklenburg before the game on the TV decision: “I always wish for real live games.”

And even worse: the stream started twelve minutes later than announced, and there were no preliminary reports or interviews before kick-off. Embarrassing: ZDF took over the US television signal. The American commentator could be heard in the first ten minutes of the game, but the German commentator had to respond.

The US tour, on which the German team plays again against the US ladies in New York on Sunday, was not under a good star anyway. The national coach (“I would have preferred a home game in November”) and the DFB leaders tried to postpone the trip or shorten it to one game. But contractual obligations forced the team to compete there. Voss-Tecklenburg: “We couldn’t say no again.”

The clubs now have to pay for the travel strains in the middle of the Bundesliga and Champions League season – but they also benefit from the ego boost of this friendly sensation!
