A good idea is worth nothing if no one understands it. The commission of experts convened by the federal government had a good idea: your gas price brake brings relief and savings incentives together. The electricity price brake should work in the same way.

But the federal government is doing everything to ensure that nobody really penetrates the concept. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has put 200 billion euros in the shop window and is using terms that his spindoctors wrote on the script for him: “double boom”, “defensive shield”, “you’ll never walk alone”.

But if you want to prevent that nobody is really left alone in the coming winter and the one that follows, you don’t just have to relieve the burden. He must also prevent Germany from running out of gas. And that only works by saving energy.

The federal government always emphasizes that we continue to encourage gas saving despite the relief – we have not announced a general gas price cap, but a gas price brake. But the truth is, even that isn’t true.
